The Molly Ockett Essay Contest honors the memory of a distinguished Bethel personality, and all the Native Americans who have played a vital part in shaping Maine. Molly Ockett (c.1740-1816) lived in the two worlds of Native American and settler Maine, offering her friendship, knowledge and healing skills to both, and has long been affectionately remembered in the Bethel region. The interplay of peoples continues to be a key to understanding Maine, past and present.
